This exhibition has been on since July '10, but speaking around no one seems to know it's on!

So good, i gotta highly recommend it.

A collection of photographs, publications, advertisements all from the Post-War decade in Melbourne.

Including beautiful photographs from Helmut Newton, Wolfgang Sievers, Henry Talbot, Mark Strizic, Norman Akin, Dacre Stubbs and Maggie Diaz.

'They were among Melbourne's leading commercial photographers during the 1950's and 60s, active in fashion illustration, advertising, architectural and industry photography.

The work featured highlights the strong connection between much commercial photography and the artist's eye."

OHWOW is pleased to announce Daniel Arsham's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, titled the fall, the ball, and the wall, on view January 20 through February 16, 2012. From two-dimensional work to sculpture, installation, public art, and performance, this New York-based artist produces occasions to (re)consider architecture, the natural world, and the manner in which they interact. the fall, the ball, and the wall, Arsham's first solo show with OHWOW, illustrates the artist's continued interest in manipulating architecture and in challenging expectations of accepted realities.

Arsham presents three bodies of work, revealing his diverse artistic practice and the progressive manner in which he approaches his subject matter, chosen media, and the surrounding environment. His structural interventions that cause walls to appear in a state of flux, as if they are melting or dripping, reverse the notion of architectural rigidity and of a partition's standard presentation. With a new series of work on canvas, he depicts realistic building constructions, which include elements that spell out words, such as "UH-HUH." A large-scale, hanging mass of tinted spheres, from the set of Merce Cunningham's final performances, is a three-dimensional sculpture based from the pixels of a hyper-magnified photograph of a cloud formation.

His aestheticized sculpture and installations realize hypothetical architectural elements and counterintuitive designs, queuing possibilities and coercing material to behave atypically. Whether through his solo creations or collaborations with architects, choreographers and dancers, Arsham presents work that possesses visual drama and minimalist aspects; measures of solid intention and moments unrehearsed; signals of human progress or an entropic future.

Daniel Arsham (b.1980, Cleveland, OH) graduated from Cooper Union, and received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award in 2003. Arsham's work has shown at institutions, such as PS1, New York, NY; The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL; The Athens Biennial, Athens, Greece; The New Museum, New York, NY; and Carré d Art de Nímes, France, among many others. A monograph of Arsham's work was published by the French Centre National des Arts Plastiques.

Intelligent sophistication is found from the selected coffee, to the interior and visual design.

The coffee is brilliantly simple. Black, white or filter - impressively accompanied by sparkling water on tap. The beans alternate daily, with a perfect selection from Melbourne's leading roasters - Seven Seeds, Market Lane and Auction Rooms' Small Batch.

Foolscap did an incredible job of the interior design, from the neon 'sunshine' signage to 'standing room only' tiles. Beyond The Pixels covered the innovative visual design, an elegant logo to notable drink placement cards with perforations, forming into a business card. Genius.

You'll notice a wonderful selection of international titles for the intelligent reader, as they were selected by us!

6 titles were selected from Parts&Crafts Auto Zine and MagNation, for the culture-knowledgeable business-types and creatives. You'll find Italy's architecture bible Domus, Ari Marcopolous' Ad Rock, Jody Barton's Black Masters, Inventory, the current Monocle and ofcourse Ala Champfest Issue 004.

Bowen at the helm and his equally friendly team manning the rest, it's hard not to feel welcome at Patricia.

They're kitted out in custom-made leather aprons, with the boys in uniforms by Vanishing Elephant and the girls with handmade jewellery from Joanna Kawecki.

Already in their first days of trading, Patricia has started with a positive buzz, and it's definitely the fine details that you may notice that make this space ahead of the game and setting the fearless standard.

After the first visit you'll wonder why you didn't get there sooner.

DOTMOV 2011 | AUSTRALIA!

SHIFT's DOTMOV digital film festival's first screening 'down under' in the usually sunny city of Melbourne, had a very wet start! A torrential downpour of rain that however, did not deter an excited audience.

The wonderfully unique posters seen around Melbourne are thanks to printing at Dawn Press, who specialise in risograph 4-barrel printing.

And good news! The 11 finalist films will be screened throughout the months of December, January and February at various times and dates on the Fed Square Big Screen. Pull up a deckchair with some friends and enjoy!

REAL GOLD TURNS 5!!!

In the winter of 2006, a group of friends came together to found Real Gold, in the hope of supporting the people and ideas that they were passionate about.

Real Gold's first public appearance was DJing for an Animal Collective after-party below an S&M club, before hosting their first event 'A Large Party' in December 2006 at the Wallis Gallery space in Hackney Wick, featuring Young Turks, Merok Records, producer Martin Cole (RIP), Jack Penate and NTS Radio founder Mr Wonderful.

The subsequent years saw a series of club nights (The International Amalgamation of Champions, Rich History & Cough / Cool) and early shows featuring the best new music including Actress, Adele, Bok Bok, Bullion, Dels, Emmy The Great, Florence and the Machine, Fucked Up, Gwilym Gold, The Horrors, How To Dress Well, Jamie XX, Joy Orbison, Laura Marling, Lightspeed Champion, New Look, Sampha and the Shining. Combined with often being the first of our contemporaries to host nights at some of London's more original and infamous venues, Time Out called us "saviours of London nightlife."

The shows paved a way for a series of t-shirt releases including a Young Turks collaboration and Warzone homage, the Train Chronicles debut record and music videos for A.R.E Weapons and Enchante. In Christmas 2007 we opened up a temporary store off Carnaby Street with stylists Avigail Claire and Damian Collins' label Silver Spoon Attire. We made a move into print and publishing in 2008 with the launch of cult satirical magazine FUN, internationally distributed for free, and Real Gold members Ben Freeman and Ben Rayner launching Ditto Press and Rayner Books respectively.

In 2010, having already put on nights at its previous incarnation as Dalston's Pier One Nightspot, Real Gold opened its first bar, The Alibi.

Real Gold family have exhibited at the Barbican, ICA, the RCA, and in Hoorn, New York, Paris, L.A and Tokyo, as well as hosting openings for the Hannah Barry Gallery's 'Optimism: The Art of Our Time' (2008) and the Bold Tendencies sculpture exhibition (2011).

It's been five years since we started.
We're having a party to mark this start.
Please come and join us to celebrate.

They have quite a few birthday gigs going on, but I think we'll be hitting up the strip club (no stripping on Saturdays tho!). Should be fun.

One of the budding graphic designers based in London, Emmanuelle Goutal's enthusiastic style is infectious.

Serious about her work, her latest project titled 'Looking At The Page' - examined how a page can move beyond its passive role as a carrier.

We describe her as budding, as she has just finished her MA at LCC (with a Distinction none-the-less), and will showcase her work in a group show titled Sincerely Yours, held in the East End.

Student work is usually quite mundane and basic, and here I find their work surprisingly inspirational.

The future of graphic design looks good.

Clean in design, featuring long articles on their chosen features - Inventory is definitely worth collecting. Even though we, (atleast London) are in the middle of the heritage/workwear obsession, this has always been Inventory's steez and they still prove to be ahead of the game. They've even got an Inventory store in Vancouver, Canada - stocking what they believe are the best products/clothes around. Expect to see any of those items in East London households and East Londoners alike.

The best BMX magazine out there, The Albion features not only mind-blowing images, but also really great interviews. The whole magazine is run by actual BMXers who live and breathe it. Best of all it is still an independent publication. How?! We featured The Albion in our 'Recommended Reading' section of Champ Issue 004 - for a reason. Start reading and collecting these- believe it or not they're free...

Dazed has been around for 20 years? Wow. Time flies. But lucky for us they've also created 'Making It Up As We Go Along' with their favourite features and photoshoots of the past 2 decades.

We usually favour i-D, but we have a soft spot for Dazed as it pushed publishing boundaries in its early years, and had a solid cast of contributors who have now gone on to do great things - such as Katie Grand and Rankin.

We also love the title, 'Making It Up As We Go Along' ... sounds just like us.

If you haven't seen Taryn Simon's latest body of work at the Tate Modern, get yourself over there as soon as you can (it's free to enter too). Berlin-based Mono Kultur have reprinted Issue 003 and Issue 15 from their archives where they focussed on Simon's work. At just 35, she is really one of a kind. We continue to praise her work, one of the most remarkable photographers of our time.

Mono Kultur is another magazine to keep a look out for. Usually a5 in size, each issue focusses on a particular designer, artist, photographer, creator. We featured them in Issue 002. Time for a re-read.

Based in Marylebone, not far from the bustling design stores and delicatessens at the heart of the beautiful area, lies Sensory Lab.
The latest venture of Tim Williams of St Ali (Clerkenwell Road), Sensory Lab is pure coffee geek heaven.
Humble design means that coffee is the main focus here, and so it should be.

The beans are all carefully sourced, roasted and ground, naturally. The choices are plentiful, and in addition, an array of special teas are also on the menu.

Various coffee-specific and japanese-imported tools are also available to purchase. Including the FORLIFE teapot which I must have in my life - especially in orange, as seen below.

The location is ideal, and the front window seats are a great spot for just watching the world go by. (SL is super close to the Monocle Store, which is also worth a visit).

If you are a coffee lover then Sensory Lab is a must-visit. It is run by some of the best in the business, those most passionate and dedicated to creating the perfect cup.
We'll be visiting again very, very soon....

When Photographer / Editor Benjamin Deberdt mentioned he was always interested to use his portrait of Jason Dill on a cover, it was only natural we worked together to create the cover for #4. It perfectly reflects Benjamin's many years on the international skate scene and his current creative work in publishing.

Phil Frost's work is recognisable from anywhere in the world. Just say FROST and people know what good stuff you're on about. The cover canvas shot was taken by photographer Ivory Serra in New York, a standout rich and red without any text but Champ title. We aimed for it as collector's item too.

Amy Fleuriot of Cyclodelic - a brilliant womans cycling clothing label out of East London - has just opened her very own studio.

The location couldn't be any more perfect. Based in the centre of Columbia Road, which holds the famous Flower Markets on Sundays, it is a great spot for a studio.

Amy will be selling her Cyclodelic clothing on Sundays, and during the weekdays works as the studio, although I'm sure appointments can be made for visits.

Champ has been major fans of Cyclodelic since we first heard of the unique, independent ladies sporting gear. Not only good for cycling, we use our pieces for running also.

Our favourite is the fact that items are so well made, and will surely last you for years.

The now passed exhibition of Alexander Hidalgo and Monika Oechsler saw some great work on display.

We have images below of their project together, with some accompanying words.

About the Exhibition:

“The idea, then, is to replace the triumphant epiphany of meaning with a silent apophany of objects and their appearances”. (Baudrillard in Photography or the writing of Light)

Alexander Hidalgo and Monika Oechsler present new works in the exhibition that explore Baudrillard’s edict to mobilize photography’s immobility and silence in order to resist speed, to defy the overflow of images and the explosion of information. The exhibition presents work in different media including animation, photography, drawing, neon and text. Alex Hidalgo’s Pavilion 1 pays homage to modernist architecture. The large-scale drawing covers the whole of the galleries glass façade. Monika Oechsler’s Cold-Case-Titan-Homage-to-Baudrillard presents an animated, posthumous portrait of the philosopher.

Clean and simple design, paired with using old sourced German paper stock and a running layout theme of the colour green provide a successful recipe for the first issue of TTA.

'Conversational' interviews with David Lynch, Javier Peres of Peres Projects, Andy McCluskey and 'moments' with Terence Koh, James Murphy (LCDSS) and Rinko Kawauchi are also found inside.

A friend had mentioned yesterday that it was the first magazine lately that he's read completely, and too right!! Finding a good mag is exciting but damn, it usually ends up in the bookshelf once another distraction comes along. I read this in one go too, the text is large and the knowledgeable content is a pleasure to read. But more importantly, it's a keeper to revisit in a few weeks or years. Ever-relevant, baby baby.

Who's designing their pages and what fonts are they consistently using? It's a good look and critique at their growth and choices of design & layout.

Laura Meseguer's put together a great reference book for fellow editorial designers. It's a great analysis of which fonts work or don't work for a particular type of communication, or structure.

EL VACÍO: A NEW ATMOSPHERIC MULTI-MEDIA EXPERIENCE

Gogy and Nikolai Rose are proud to announce the launch of the collaborative multi-media project El Vacío. The project uses a variety of mediums - photography, video, print design, installation design, web design, music, and scent - to create a monument to a feeling.Inspired by Salvator Dalí’s interpretation of Diego Velásquez’s renowned painting Las Meninas, El Vacío is an exploration of the void: “El Vacío is boundless, intoxicating, everything ephemeral, fleeting, blurry, warm, seductive. It passes before you know you’re in it. Being there is euphoric but dangerous, beautiful yet treacherous, dark and cryptic. It is occluded by grey area, lust and living … It is the obstruction of estionable, nothing definite.”
At the project’s core is a series of photographs taken by Gogy on his cell phone, a tool well suited for spontaneity. He approached Nikolai Rose to collaborate on the design of a book for the images, as well as the creation of an immersive installation to embody the El Vacío experience. Jonathan Vingiano, of the digital agency OKFocus, has created a website for the project that will launch alongside the installation. El-Vacio.com serves both as a digital extension of the El Vacío atmosphere, as well as a hub for practical information about the project (www.okfoc.us).Physical Therapy has created an ambient soundtrack for the installation and that will also be available for download on the website (www.sheneedstherapy.net).Joya has also partnered with the team to create a limited-edition scented candle that will burn at the installation (www.joyastudio.com).
El Vacío has previously shown in Tokyo, Japan this past October, and is opening at The Wayward Gallery in London, England on November 17th, 2011 at 8pm, and will be on display until November 22nd, 2011.

I AM PACKED

I'm heading to Paris (next Friday though!) and saw this site by POST CREATIVE for Air New Zealand.

One of our favourite airlines, I was intrigued and needed to find out more. Turns out Post Creative do some great work, with this project being one of those.

It's great looking through what others own, and use for travel.

The core items = you can't take everything you own with you.

Look out for some really interesting contributions, amongst the ton of Supreme items (I can talk..), but it's a visual way to share the items you recommend for others.

MISTER EDWARDS

Champ met with Neil Edwards while in Sydney, an incredible man as passionate about print and magazine design like no other.

Working as an Art Editor for London-based I.D magazine in the late 80's, he left to

begin his own Design Studio with a fellow I.D. designer and has found himself living in Sydney since. It must be the brilliant weather and good-looking folk of Australia that's done it... Oh yes.

Neil showed us some of his latest print-specific works including zines and stamps.

The layout is impeccable, if you look closely you'll notice each design placement is carefully curated, referencing POP and a variety of old-school tokens.

Jacob is a London-based Illustrator - situated in the heart of the city.

Recently focussing more on his work, Jacob has just released a set of stickers of his designs.

He comes from a skate background, and infact still skating now, stickers are a staple.

We really like he has chosen quality over quantity. The stickers are large in size (one is up to 19cm in height) and are all super detailed. They are also all die-cut, and this bold move ensures they look clean stuck on any surface. A smart move because of the stickers' large size.

DSM held a special Open Day event a few weeks ago on October 13th, as a part of all the happenings in London's Frieze Art Fair.

On the Ground Floor, the AVAF display greets you as you walk in. Designed by Rei, the sculpture is covered in AVAF print. The Brazilian duo have some imagination - wacky, random and very, very colourful. You can see more of their work in their book AVAF Published by Rizzoli (also available in-store).

The Third Floor displays James Salaiz's Ceramic Bullets in their glass cabinets. These are beautiful, and much better in person than you can see here on the screen.
James himself is a super sweet New Yorker, and we were excited to see he has his works displayed in various CdG stores - well done.

Note :

The Trading Museum in Paris has now closed its doors,as its presence there was temporary, but you can still find all the above Designers in DSM.

Ganryu is definitely something to check out.

Back to the Basement, the latest running collection by Undercover for Nike, is a welcome addition. The FA/HO 2012 collection of the Gyakusou range is displayed with a Japanese theme (ofcourse) and includes an iPad with a video of Running Monks on loop.

The collection will see your wallet getting lighter... Simple in aesthetics, each piece has been well thought out with pockets, zips and seams in the right places - with running as the focus in the design. With Winter coming up, we need every reason to get out of the warmth and into the cold outside. I think some nice threads are enough motivation. Let's get running...

Mid- November, sees the launch of Comme des Garcons latest perfume, titled Comme des Garcons.
The perfume smells amazing. Very feminine.
According to CdG:
' Constructed linearly, the fragrance opens with the man made organic composites of aldehydes and safraleine, opening up with hawthorns and derivations of lilac, before exploding in a riot of flower oxides, then finally succumbing to notes of industrial glue and brown scotch tape with hints of musk and stryax.
